NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) – The Junior Ambassador Golf Classic teed off at Rivers Edge Golf Course on Tuesday in North Platte. It marked day one of the tournament. Wednesday will be the final day at Lake Maloney Golf Course, as young golfers come from all over the state to play in the tournament.
The tournament is to get children excited about playing golf at a more competitive level when they get older. According to committee member Matt Hasenauer, many who start playing at this tournament at a young age keep coming back and continue to grow in the game they love.
“I think last year a young lady from Broken Bow, Cameron Johnson, ended up winning class C, and her mom wrote a letter,” Hasenauer said. “Her very first tournament was this tournament, so she started her career playing in North Platte, and the state finals were here, so she ended her career playing; just little situations like that make the event all worthwhile because you see these kids come back year after year.”
Golf enthusiasts as young as seven years old can participate, and it’s a great way for them to learn and improve on the game.
“It’s a great place for kids that are playing tournament golf or thinking about getting into high school golf,” Hasenauer said. “It’s kind of a low-key tournament, not quite as serious as the high school tournaments, but we have a lot of fun events that are associated with it. they have a chance to do the scramble and maybe be paired with a golfer that has a lot of experience playing tournament golf.”
