Following complaints by Taylor Fritz and other players about the balls at the Dallas Open the problem with them has now been explained.
After Fritz defeated Arthur Rinderknech in round one, the American number one revealed he was recovering from an oblique injury, and he said it was caused by the sudden change of balls from what were used at the Australian Open.
This came after Carlos Alcaraz, who is playing at the Rotterdam Open, criticised the constant ball changes and warned it will cause players to get injured.
As the complaints continue to intensify, the issue with the balls has now been laid out.
Alcaraz and Taylor Fritz are two of the biggest names to make recent complaints about the number of different balls used on the ATP Tour.
Alexander Zverev previously voiced his complaints about the balls used and having little time to adapt to the constant changes.
But now it has become clearer why the balls are causing some players to get injured, as Nick Monroe from Tennis Channel explains.
“So you have two different Dunlop balls that are being used at the Australian Open and in Dallas and other ATP events,” he said.
“The one at the Dallas Open is supposed to be more durable but it’s actually becoming heavier so that’s what is happening with the players.
“What the ATP is trying to do with that more durable ball that they’re using in Dallas is try to find a ball they can use on clay, hard and grass courts.
“But the problem is with that more durable ball the felt is actually getting bigger so you know, you’re seeing the injuries and you’re hearing these players talk about ‘we can’t hit the ball past the service line, we’re having to swing so hard.’”
“That’s why Taylor Fritz was getting hurt in Australia and a lot of these other players are complaining about it in Dallas.”
Alcaraz continued his quest for a first indoor title by reaching the Rotterdam Open quarter-finals.
The Spaniard took just 63 minutes to defeat qualifier Andrea Vavassori 6-2, 6-1 in what was an entertaining affair.
“Today was much better,” said Alcaraz, who plays compatriot Pedro Martínez in the next round. “Every time that I leave the court, I’m always thinking how I can be better.
“That’s what happened after the first round. I just tried to be focused on the things that I had to improve from the first round.
“Not making too many mistakes, not having too many ups and downs in the match. If I’m a break up, just to keep going with the same intensity. That’s what I tried today, I think what I did was pretty good. After these types of matches, my confidence goes up.”
Fritz on the other hand, is out of the Dallas Open following defeat to Denis Shapovalov. The Canadian came from a set down to win 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(2).
The US Open runner-up was the top seed in Dallas, but his run has now come to an end and it is back to the drawing board for the World number four.
