Alexander Zverev, the current world No 2, reinforced his status as one of the most accomplished players to not win a major with his runner-up result at the 2025 Australian Open.
Here, we look at the six players who have reached a career-high ATP ranking of world No 2 but not won a Grand Slam title.
Marcelo Rios is the only men’s world No 1 in tennis history to not win a Grand Slam title, having climbed to the top of the rankings for the first time in March 1998. He spent six weeks as the world No 1 and 33 weeks in the top 2 between 1998 and 1999.
The Chilean reached his only Grand Slam final at the 1998 Australian Open and suffered a 2-6, 2-6, 2-6 loss to Petr Korda.
During a 10-year career spanning from 1994 to 2004, Rios won 18 ATP titles from 31 finals, including five Masters Series crowns from seven finals and a Grand Slam Cup title (a season-ending event which was held from 1990-1999).
Alex Corretja peaked at second in the ATP Rankings in February 1999 and remained there for two weeks.
The Spaniard is a two-time French Open runner-up, having lost to Carlos Moya in straight sets in the 1998 final and Gustavo Kuerten in four sets in the 2001 title match.
In a professional career spanning from 1991 to 2005, Corretja secured 17 titles from the 30 finals he reached, including an ATP Finals title and two Masters Series crowns from five finals.
Magnus Norman spent six straight weeks as the world No 2 after ascending to the ranking position for the first time in June 2000.
After reaching the semi-finals of the 2000 Australian Open, Norman featured in his only major final at that year’s edition of Roland Garros, losing in four sets to Kuerten.
In a career that spanned from 1995 to 2003, the Swede collected 12 titles from the 18 finals he played in, including a Masters Series title in Rome.

Tommy Haas reached a career-high ranking of No 2 in May 2002 and he amassed six weeks in total as a top 2 player that season.
The German is one of the best players to not reach a Grand Slam final, having fallen at the major semi-final stage on four occasions.
Haas lost Australian Open semi-finals to Yevgeny Kafelnikov (1999), Marat Safin (2002) and Fernando Gonzalez (2007), while he was beaten by Roger Federer in the 2009 Wimbledon semi-finals.
During a 22-year career spanning from 1996 to 2018, Haas won 15 titles from 28 finals, including one Masters Series title from two championship matches, while he is also an Olympic silver medallist.
Casper Ruud spent three weeks at his career-high ranking of world No 2 in September 2022.
The Norwegian is a three-time major finalist, having lost French Open finals in straight sets to Rafael Nadal (2022) and Novak Djokovic (2023), and a US Open final in four sets to Carlos Alcaraz (2022).
Ruud has claimed 12 titles, a tally consisting of one ATP 500 crown and 11 titles at 250 level, while he has been a runner-up at a further 11 tournaments, including at the ATP Finals and at two Masters 1000 events.
Alexander Zverev has spent 26 weeks of his career to date as the ATP world No 2, having first climbed to second spot in June 2022.
The German has been a runner-up at majors on three occasions, losing to Dominic Thiem in five sets at the 2020 US Open, Alcaraz in five sets at the 2024 French Open and Jannik Sinner in straight sets at the 2025 Australian Open.
The German has won 23 titles from the 37 finals he has contested, including two ATP Finals titles, an Olympic gold medal and seven Masters 1000 crowns.
