Texas women’s basketball nonconference schedule
With Southeast Missouri State in town, No. 4 Texas will open its 2024-25 basketball season on Sunday afternoon.
In its history, Texas is 38-12 in season opener. The Longhorns last opened a campaign with a 0-1 record in 2019.
How has Texas fared in its openers under head coach Vic Schaefer? Pretty good.
Stay tuned for live updates:
Taylor Jones scored the first points of UT’s season and things are underway at Moody Center. Texas forced turnovers on SEMO’s first two possessions, but the Redhawks have been able to get some things going on offense. With eight points, the 6-foot-4 Jones has been able to take advantage of her size advantage in the paint.
A UT spokesperson confirmed before Sunday’s game that Laila Phelia won’t play against SEMO. No reason was given for Phelia’s unavailability. The senior guard is dressed in team gear but did not participate in many of the warm-up drills.
Phelia transferred to Texas this season after leading Michigan in scoring last season. Phelia started for Texas in last week’s exhibition game against UT-Tyler. Texas senior Shay Holle will start in Phelia’s place alongside Rori Harmon, Madison Booker, Aaliyah Moore and Taylor Jones.
Texas owns a 1-0 record in its all-time series with Southeast Missouri State. The Longhorns recorded an 88-47 win over SEMO at the Erwin Center on Nov. 17, 2021.
Texas still has two starters from that 41-point win on its roster. Point guard Rori Harmon scored 11 points and grabbed six rebounds while forward Aaliyah Moore scored six points before exiting with an ankle injury. Shay Holle, who is currently a fifth-year guard, came off the bench for UT in that game and played a team-high 26 minutes.
None of the 10 Redhawks who played against Texas three years ago are still on the SEMO roster.
