Why Texas football enters Arch Manning era with lofty expectations
Cedric Golden and Houston Chronicle columnist Kirk Bohls discuss the end of the Texas season and quarterback Arch Manning taking over behind center.
It didn’t take long for Steve Sarkisian to fill a vacancy on the Texas football team’s coaching staff.
According to multiple reports, Mark Orphey will be the new safeties coach at Texas. Orphey will replace Blake Gideon, who left UT last week to become the new defensive coordinator at Georgia Tech. So far, Gideon has been the only coach to depart the Texas coaching staff this offseason.
Orangebloods was the first to report on Orphey’s hire, which has not yet been announced by Texas. ESPN later confirmed that report.

Orphey has spent the past three seasons coaching the cornerbacks at Rutgers. He has also coached at Utah State (2019-20), Montana State (2017-18) and Texas Southern (2011-12). During the 2021 season, Orphey worked as a defensive analyst at Alabama.
Orphey is a Houston native who played collegiately at Texas Southern.
At Texas, Orphey will inherit a talented safeties room. Michael Taaffe is returning after earning All-American accolades last season, Jelani McDonald received valuable playing time during the 2024 season and Derek Williams Jr. is set to return from the knee injury that ended his season with the Longhorns. Incoming freshman Jonah Williams was a five-star prospect during the 2025 recruiting cycle.
