WATCH: Cedric Golden on Texas football moving forward after CFP loss
Texas lost 28-14 to Ohio State at the Cotton Bowl and finished the 2024 season at 13-3. The Buckeyes will meet Notre Dame in the title game.
Texas football defensive end Colton Vasek will undergo shoulder surgery Monday, according to a report from 247 Sports’ Chip Brown. Vasek’s surgery will include the repair of a torn labrum.
The rising sophomore made his debut in 2024 against Colorado State after redshirting his freshman year. Vasek flashed his potential early in the season, recording a sack against UTSA and Mississippi State. However, shoulder and hip injuries limited his effectiveness late in the season, preventing him from adding to those numbers.
With Barryn Sorrell moving to the NFL, the Longhorns will look to Vasek for consistent contributions in 2025 alongside fellow Westlake alumnus Ethan Burke. A rising senior, Burke’s production dipped from his 5.5 sack sophomore season, recording two sacks as a junior.
Vasek doesn’t have Burke’s experience but may be more talented according to the 247 Sports Composite, which ranked him as a four-star and Burke as a three-star. Vasek was one of the Chaparral’s best defensive players ever, recording 71 tackles and 14 sacks his senior season. He was a big contributor to Westlake’s remarkable run of 54 straight wins and three consecutive state titles, which ended at the hands of Galena Park North Shore in 2023.
