Gauff started the second set on top, forcing Osaka wide on many occasions and making up for lost ground. The Japanese star remained formidable, once again taking advantage of Gauff’s double faults to re-establish her control of the match.
However, Osaka began to falter towards the end of the second set as Gauff seized the opportunity to level things up. Osaka had to retire at a set apiece due to injury, comforted by Gauff who moves onto the final eight of the tournament.
Gauff previously pulled off a stunning Australian Open win over then defending champion Osaka in 2020, when the American herself was just 15-years-old.
The American will face Yuliia Starodubtseva in the quarter-finals, after she overcame tenth seed Anna Kalinskaya in straight sets.
