MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WPDE) — Myrtle Beach is a popular golfing destination, and a place you don’t normally see a lot of snow.

Since Myrtle Beach got five inches of snow after the snow storm, golf course greens were put in danger.

Golf Course Superintendent at Pine Lakes Country Club, Alan Jarvis, said they were prepared even though they rarely see snow storms.

“We got the covers out on the greens Tuesday before the snow came,” Jarvis said. “The idea would be to insolate the greens and protect them from the cold temperature that they were expecting.”

With the course having 18 greens to take care of, Jarvis said it’s expensive between fertilizer, fungicides and mowing.

Jarvis said the covers are only used if freezing temperatures are predicted.

“If we knew we were going to be getting snow we probably could have avoided covering because the snow would have helped protect them. But we could not count on the snow we knew we had cold temperatures coming,” Jarvis said.

The General Manager, Kurtis Kuhn, said safety is the golf course’s main priority.

“Our number one concern is cart passes, making sure there is no ice out there, making sure everybody is going to be safe and be able to play,” Kuhn said.

Whether it’s a hurricane or snowstorm, Kuhn said the golf course tries to be prepared for anything.

“Let’s play some golf; we are ready to get back,” Kuhn said. “We are excited to see the green grass, kind of showing up through the greens, getting the covers off and let’s get back to Myrtle Beach golf.”
