Taylor Fritz praised David Gofin after beating him to reach the Shanghai Masters semi-finals.
The 26-year-old continued his solid run at the Masters 1000 event by securing a 6-4, 6-3 win over the Belgian.
The American recorded his second win against Goffin in three meetings and is into his fifth semi-final at this level.
Taylor Fritz is going in search of his first Masters 1000 title since beating Rafael Nadal to win the 2022 Indian Wells Masters.
Fritz asserted his authority from the beginning and overwhelmed Goffin with strong and precise groundstrokes off the forehand and backhand.
Fritz, the World number seven, converted three of his seven break points and wrapped up the victory in one hour and 22 minutes.
Fritz was impressive on serve and he won 70% of his second serve points. This was important for him, as he remembered how well Goffin returns serve from their previous encounters, so he needed to be sharp on serve.
“I feel like I have been serving pretty well all week, especially in today’s match. I knew I had to,” he said during his on-court interview. “Serves which might be good against someone else might not work against Goffin.
“The one thing I remember about playing him even though it’s been five or six years is that he’s an incredible returner and serves which I am not used to seeing come back, do come back. I really had to be on it with my serve and be extra aggressive with my second serve.”
Fritz broke new ground after becoming just the second American semi-finalist in Shanghai Masters history.
The US Open runner-up is the first American man born in 1990 or after to reach five Masters 1000 semi-finals.
In the process he won his 49th match of the season and aim to reach 50 when he competes for a spot in the Shanghai final.
“I feel like sometimes it takes a couple of matches to find my routines, to find what feels good and what is working for me,” said Fritz.
“I feel like once I get past the first two rounds, I feel very locked in. I’ve come this far already, so I might as well really dial it in and I’m just enjoying being here.”
