Taylor Fritz made history as he cruised past an out of sorts Daniil Medvedev on opening day of the ATP Finals.
Taylor Fritz opened his ATP World Finals campaign with a composed straight-sets win over Daniil Medvedev, taking the match 6-4, 6-3.
Though both players held serve throughout, Medvedev served up seven double faults, three of which came in a calamitous game.
The Russian struck a hat-trick, gifting Fritz the game and the set before smashing his racquet in frustration.
It didn’t stop there for Medvedev as he received a point penalty after throwing another racquet to the floor and breaking a court-side microphone.
Fritz showed remarkable composure in the face of a truly unpredictable Medvedev to come through in just over 80 minutes.
Fritz has had a stellar season, reaching new heights with his first Grand Slam semi-final at Wimbledon.
He then went one step further at the US Open, reaching his first major final and becoming the first American man in 15 years to play in a Slam final.
As the season rolls on, Fritz’s consistency and drive have kept him at the top of the game.
With 54 wins last year, Fritz’s opening win over the Russian saw him reach a half century once again.
He becomes the first American man to record consecutive 50-win seasons since former world number four James Blake in 2006 and 2007.
American tennis is clearly on an upswing, with five men and five women ranked in the top 30.
Coco Gauff’s recent WTA Finals title has highlighted this success, while Fritz and Jessica Pegula both made it to the US Open finals, underscoring their strength on the big stage.
Beyond these top-tier players, two more American women – Amanda Anisimova and Peyton Stearns – ave broken back into the top 50.
On the men’s side, Brandon Nakashima’s resurgence, Alex Michelsen’s rise, and Marcos Giron’s solid form add even more depth to the American roster.
Both the men’s and women’s teams play in the Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup later this month, with the women tipped for the title.
This momentum is shaping up to make 2025 a thrilling year for U.S. tennis.
