OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. // Navy’s Jack Tarzy (Jr / Medford, N.J.) completed the two-day, 54-hole Jackson T. Stephens Cup with a 14-over par 224 to tie for 29th among a field that featured six of the top 50 individuals in the country and three top-20 teams. Tarzy was one of six golfers who received a special invitation to play as an individual in the team-scored event held at the Oklahoma City Golf and Country Club in Oklahoma City, Okla.
Tarzy opened the tournament by posting a 4-over par 74, but the second round proved to be difficult as the third-year standout slid in the standings after carding an 8-over par 78 in the afternoon shift. Tarzy saved his best round for last as he closed out play on Tuesday with a 2-over par 72.
Oklahoma State, ranked 14th in the latest installment of the national rankings, won the stroke play portion of the tournament by 4 strokes over 20th-ranked SMU. The Cowboys covered the course 6 strokes over par and was the only team to finish a round under par. Oklahoma State (282-291-273=846) turned in a 7-under par 273 to jump from third to the top of the leader board. Meanwhile SMU (284-285-281=85) finished up strong with a 1-over par 281, but fell to second in the final standings, followed by San Diego State (+12, 852), #1 Oklahoma (+15, 855), #26 Florida State (+31, 871) and Arkansas (+41, 881).
Two of Oklahoma State’s five golfers placed among the top 5, including Filip Fahlberg-Johnsson, who tied SMU’s William Sides for medalist honors with a 1-under par 209.
Oklahoma State will square off against SMU on Wednesday in match play for the tournament title.
Meanwhile, Sue Lee (79-75-76=230) and Bridget Hoang (82-91-79=252) represented Navy in the women’s tournament and finished 26th and 34th, respectively.
The Jackson T. Stephens Cup is named in memory of the late Augusta National Chairman Jackson T. Stephens, who attended the Naval Academy and graduated as a member of the Class of 1947. The field at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium is named Jack Stephens Field, whose gift of $10 million in 2003 aided in the renovations of Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, as well as a handful of other projects part of the United States Naval Academy Campaign: Leaders to Serve the Nation.
