LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. – The Texans couldn’t have started their spring any better – with a team tournament victory.
This marks back-to-back top-two finishes for the Purple and White dating back to their fall campaign when Tarleton State took second at The Judson. Tarleton State won the Wigwam Preview on Tuesday shooting +30, winning by eight strokes over British Columbia at Wigwam Golf Course in Litchfield Park, Arizona.
“I am very proud of the way the team competed this week,” said head coach Isabel Jimenez. “They had each other’s backs and made a big team effort. We could have not asked for a better way to start the spring season. A couple victories slipped out of our fingers last fall, and this was the best way to redeem ourselves.”
The Texans had three finish in the top-10 among the 51-woman field, led by Louise Depadt who finished fifth marking her third top-five finish dating back to the fall. She finished shooting +5 (221, 75-71-75). Following the Lusanger, France, native, was Mathilde Brogens who finished tied for sixth. The senior turned in a score of +6 (222, 75-76-71). Lou Deltombe notched her a top-10 finished as she came in off the course tied for ninth. She shot +8 (224, 73-78-73) earning her fourth top-10 finished dating back to the fall campaign.
Rounding out the Texans victory was two top-25 finishes from Darianys Guzman and Rebeca Fernandez. Guzman earned herself a top-20 spot as she turned in a score of +13 (229, 74-76-79) finishing tied for 18th. Fernandez finished her first event of the spring tied for 22nd shooting +15 (231, 74-77-80).
Tarleton State won the nine-team field that included six other WAC programs; Utah Tech, California Baptist, Seattle U, UT Arlington, Southern Utah, and Utah Valley. British Columbia and Idaho State were the other two programs.
The Texans are set to return to action in just under a month as they will head up I-20 for the West Texas Classic hosted by Abilene Christian. The classic will take place March 3-4.
