LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC)—The massive snowstorm that barreled through the South earlier this Tuesday affected multiple things around the lake area including Prep Sports.
With the conditions, many coaches had to work hard to figure out plans to keep their teams focused while they couldn’t leave their houses.
“It was different in the sense that obviously, we weren’t together, and so mentally it was a time for them to spend time with their family and take a break,” said Sulphur Boys Basketball Head Coach Adam Coleman.
“The good thing about us is we do all our game plans digitally, we were in a good spot mentally, and that’s why I was telling them to stay mentally sharp and to enjoy your family time,” said Barbe Girls Basketball Head Coach Trey Digiglia.
Coaches in Lake Charles and the surrounding areas have created positive relationships over the years, and those relationships have allowed teams to fix their schedules without too many problems.
“It was a fairly easy process just because most coaches are easy to work with, we all understand how things work, and all of this was out of our control,” said Sam Houston Boys Basketball Head Coach Jayce Hebert.
“Us and Sulphur were supposed to play on Tuesday, we had already talked about moving the game because we couldn’t find enough referees to come to our game, and so it worked out perfectly because they pretty much made us move to Monday and it was easy, we just went and played a little earlier in the day,” said Iowa Girls Basketball Head Coach Courtnee Hollins.
While getting everything settled on the floor, the coaches also made time to have some fun out in the snow with their families in what was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
“I was a big kid, I was out there making snow angels and playing in the snow just with my daughter, and so it was a great time, like I said, to be with our family, you forget about how much time you spend away and how much time you’re at the gym with your extended basketball family,” said Coleman.
“It was really cool to wake up and look out the window and just see how white it was, and I told my wife at one point that it looked like we lived near an apartment complex and said it kind of looks like we’re at a ski resort,” said Hebert.
“I got to enjoy the day with my kids, they played out there, and took a bunch of pictures because I don’t think this probably ever happen in our lifetime again, so if it doesn’t at least we have pictures and so we enjoyed ourselves we’re glad to be back and get back rolling,” said Hollins.
