Suspended Georgia football wide receiver Colbie Young ramps up involvement with team

Colbie Young, the Georgia football wide receiver suspended after his arrest last month, is ramping up his involvement with the team.

That came after Young was cleared by UGA’s Equal Opportunity Office, which allowed him to return to team activities including practice, his attorney, Kim Stephens told the Athens Banner-Herald Monday night.

That university investigation involved all parties and witnesses to the case and involved the review of reports and other evidence, Stephens said.

Young still faces misdemeanor charges of battery and assault on an unborn child.

“We expect and hope prosecutors will follow the Title IX offices lead and dismiss the charges against Mr. Young in the very near future,” Stephens said.

Young took part in team meetings Monday and was at practice for the first time since his arrest, a source said.

Georgia has said the Miami transfer won’t be able to play until the legal process is resolved. He was suspended indefinitely after his Oct. 8 arrest.

Georgia executive associate athletic director Steven Drummond told the Athens Banner-Herald Monday night that coach Kirby Smart will address Young’s status on Tuesday.

Georgia plays Georgia Tech Friday night in Athens.

“We want to support Colbie where we can,” Smart said earlier this month. “We continue to provide him with access to our facilities and the support resources we have, whether that’s Rankin (Smith Academic Center), the training room, mental health, the weight room. But the legal process has to play itself out before we can do anything.”

Stephens sought reinstatement to the team and the charges dismissed after presenting an affidavit to the prosecutor in the case and UGA that he said is from the female accuser. Stephens said he believes that retraction played a part in the decision by the university.

The woman, Young’s ex-girlfriend, notified the Solicitor’s Office multiple times she wanted the charges dropped.

“I have requested that the charges against Colbie Young be dismissed because the information contained in the police report is slanted and does not accurately portray what occurred on Oct. 8,” the female states in the affidavit.

Athens-Clarke County Solicitor Will Fleenor told the Banner-Herald Nov. 7 : “As a rule, I do not comment on pending criminal cases.”
