Horse racing always has been a “what have you done for me lately” game, so even after Super Screener crushed last weekend’s Kentucky Derby prep races, it returns for more this weekend.
Last week’s Super Screener tabbed $37.60 winner Flood Zone, $8.40 winner Sovereignty, and $8.20 winner Journalism in the Grade 3 Gotham, Fountain of Youth (G2) and San Felipe (G2), respectively. But that’s not all. Because each race in Super Screener includes wagering strategy, the Gotham and Fountain of Youth analysis also included suggested exacta plays involving cold exactas worth 51-1 and 14-1, respectively.

As for this week, of course the Tampa Bay Derby (G3) featuring Kentucky Derby hopefuls and the Azeri Stakes (G2) with the return of horse of the year Thorpedo Anna are included. But the Hillsborough Stakes (G2) on Saturday at Tampa Bay Downs caught Shutty’s eye from a price perspective, with morning-line favorite Saffron Moon looking opposable.
Chad Brown-trained fillies or mares have won four of the last seven editions of this race, and he wields a very strong hand once again in this affair with a trio of starters who very well could make up the winning trifecta, Shutty says. “Of the Brown trio, Saffron Moon will be in closest range stalking the pace, and in the final analysis it is her stablemate Venencia that gets the top win contender and top value designations.
“This mare owns the classic strong turn of foot you see in all of Brown’s stakes-level fillies and mares, and that late foot will be needed to overcome the slower pace. What really makes this lightly raced mare such a compelling win candidate is that she moved forward in every start since her debut, culminating into a lifetime top to close 2024 and projecting to move forward again.
“This might be my strongest win play of the day.”
