It is always exciting when an undefeated runner steps into stakes company for the first time, but lofty expectations often mean a short price.
So it goes with Muhimma in the Demoiselle Stakes on Saturday at Aqueduct. The $700,000 Munnings filly who Brad Cox trains for Shadwell Stable has won both her starts by a combined 13 lengths, but she is shipping to New York from Kentucky and stretching out to 1 1/8 miles.
That leaves the door open to try to beat this filly who is 4-5 on the morning line and could go off at even less than that. Fortuna Mia gets the nod from Mike Shutty at 15-1 morning line.
“This filly has moved forward in each of her three starts following her debut victory,” Shutty notes. “In her first route attempt – albeit a one-turn mile – she moved forward against tougher rivals than she faces here. She’ll be reserved early but has demonstrated the kind of balance you want to see from a filly who needs to make this kind of run. Form-cycle analysis is predicting a big move forward.”
