The Memphis Grizzlies were trying to pull off a monster trade before the Feb. 6 deadline, an NBA insider has revealed.
The Grizz successfully traded Marcus Smart to the Washington Wizards just before the deadline, but ESPN analyst Bob Myers spilled the beans on Thursday about another, much larger Memphis trade attempt.
Myers appeared on ESPN’s “NBA Today” program and let slip that the Grizzlies tried to trade for Phoenix Suns superstar Kevin Durant.
The 36-year-old Durant, who is in year three of a four-year, $194.2 million deal, was reportedly sought after aggressively by the Golden State Warriors, a team that Durant expressed he had no desire to return to.
According to Myers, Memphis was also calling the Suns about a Durant trade, an idea that KD also shot down.
“Memphis … tried on Jimmy Butler, they tried on Kevin Durant,” Myers said.
“The problem is … those guys said no.”
ESPN’s Brian Windhorst interrupted Myers just after the Durant mention to signal to the TV audience that Myers had just provided breaking news.
“That was kind of just news that just came out of Bob’s mouth there about Memphis and Kevin Durant,” Windhorst said.
Durant to the Grizzlies has been an idea in the ether since December, and had Phoenix entertained a deal, Smart more than likely would have been shipped off to the Suns instead of the lowly Wizards.
It’s hard to figure out why KD would have disliked the idea of joining the Grizzlies, who might have had a real shot at contending with him in the fray.
A big 3 of Durant, Ja Morant, and Jaren Jackson Jr. would have been a very dangerous core.
