Sun rises again as sun sets for Alexandrova and Navarro
Sixth-seeded Linda Noskova has upset second-seeded American Emma Navarro 7-6 (9-7) 7-5 to reach the Monterrey Open final.
The 19-year-old Czech will face Lulu Sun of New Zealand on Saturday, with both seeking their first WTA Tour title in the hard-court event at Sonoma Club.
Sun beat third-seeded Ekaterina Alexandrova 7-5 3-6 7-6 (8-6) in the first semi-final. Last week in the Cincinnati Open, Sun beat Noskova 6-4 7-6 (7-4) in the round of 64.
The unseeded Sun, who grabbed the attention of the tennis world in July when she reached the quarter-finals of Wimbledon by knocking out Britain’s Emma Raducanu, served well and crushed 17 aces to squeak past her Russian opponent.
With Friday’s win, Sun will break into the top 50 for the first time after the tournament concludes.
Noskova was an Australian Open quarter-finalist in January, while the 23-year-old Sun reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals last month to become the first qualifier to get that far since 2010.
Sun won the deciding match for the University of Texas in the 2021 NCAA team championship in her lone college season.
