The Philadelphia Eagles coaching staff unleashed a new offensive weapon in their 28-3 win against the Giants in Week 7. Linebacker Ben VanSumeren played five offensive snaps and had massive blocks in the running game. Previously almost exclusively used on special teams, the 24-year-old defender is enjoying a larger role as a fullback.

Considering the success the team found utilizing the former undrafted free agent as a fullback, head coach Nick Sirianni will likely continue deploying him on the offensive end. While doing so, however, they have to pay close attention to one particular NFL rule, per Dave Zangaro of NBC Sports Philadelphia.

Because VanSumeren wears the No. 57, he has to report to the officials every single time he goes on the field as an offensive player. Otherwise, he can’t be an eligible receiver even though he is deployed as a fullback.

When asked about it, VanSumeren didn’t hide his annoyance about it. At the same time, if it means that he is going to see the field more, the former Michigan State defender will be happy to do so.

““That is annoying. It’s annoying but it’s something we’ve got to do. We talked about maybe changing numbers but I think it’s too deep in the season to do that.”

This is especially important this season as illegal formation penalties have been a major talking point this season. A penalty during an important stretch of the game could be very costly for the Eagles.

Since it’s too late in the season to change your jersey number, this will have to be an issue both VanSumeren and the coaching staff have to be on top of all season.
