Stefanos Tsitsipas has now had his say on the US Open event that has received lots of backlash since its announcement.
Mixed doubles will be different at the US Open this year, after tournament director Stacey Allaster announced the changes that will be made.
This includes the event now taking place over just two days during the US Open fan week, with singles players also receiving priority in terms of the entry list.
As expected, the US Open have received lots of backlash from both fans and players with some suggesting that it has turned the event into more of an exhibition.
Last year’s US Open champions have also criticized the move, after winning their first Grand Slam title together in New York.
Despite the backlash, there have already been some big names showing interest in playing the new mixed doubles event.
Taylor Fritz will play US Open mixed doubles for the first time since 2015, after explaining that this change is very suitable for him.
The American is not the only top five ranked player to have expressed interest in the revamped event, with world number one Aryna Sabalenka also wanting to play mixed doubles at the US Open this year.
When asked about this change, Tsitsipas revealed that he plans to play US Open mixed doubles with top WTA player and girlfriend Paula Badosa.
“She’s the mixed doubles partner I would always play with,” Tsitsipas told media. “I don’t have any other options out there or any other female player that I would want to play mixed doubles with. She’s always under my consideration and always someone I would want to share the court with.”
Tsitsipas and Badosa played mixed doubles at the US Open for the first time last year, losing in the first round to Giuliana Olmos and Santiago González.
They are next set to join forces at the Eisenhower Cup exhibition event that takes place at Indian Wells.
While Tsitsipas has declared that Badosa is his only possible partner for US Open mixed doubles, the Greek played alongside Maria Sakkari just last month at the United Cup.
Sakkari and Tsitsipas have also joined forces at two Olympic Games, and reached the quarter-finals in Tokyo.
Tsitsipas has also been on the opposite side of the net to Badosa when partnering Sakkari, having beaten the Spaniard alongside Cameron Norrie at the 2023 Eisenhower Cup.
However, this year Tsitsipas and Badosa will join forces, while Sakkari will partner Norwegian Casper Ruud.
The 2025 Eisenhower Cup takes place on Tuesday March 4, with singles main draw action at Indian Wells getting underway just a day later.
