With just days to go before Week 1 of the 2024 NFL season officially kicks off, NFL analysts are still throwing out trade ideas, and the latest involves the Pittsburgh Steelers and Kansas City Chiefs striking a deal.
In an article written by Bleacher Report’s Alex Ballentine in which he makes “bold trade predictions” for the 2024 campaign, he has the Steelers trading either Najee Harris or Jaylen Warren to the Chiefs. Ballentine did not mention compensation, though.
One reason behind his bold prediction comes from Green Bay Packers running back Josh Jacobs recently revealing that the Chiefs went after him hard in free agency, which suggests they could be looking to add a running back.
From the Steelers’ perspective, Ballentine believes this could happen because both Harris and Warren are hitting free agency in 2025 and could be dealt if the Steelers struggle early in the season.
It’s no secret the running back position has been devalued. But if the Chiefs believe that adding another talented back could put them over the top in their quest to threepeat as champions then it would be worth it to them.
Notable trade targets that could make sense include either of the Pittsburgh Steelers running backs Jaylen Warren and/or Najee Harris. Both are set to become free agents after this season and it’s unlikely the Steelers pay both of them.
If the Steelers struggle early in the season they might be willing to deal one of them to the Chiefs and get something in return.
While it’s technically true that both Warren and Harris are free agents, Warren is a restricted free agent that the team will have control over, so it’s a very different situation than the one with Harris.
Nevertheless, it’s certainly possible a trade like this happens if Pittsburgh has a bad first half of the season, but Harris is more likely to be dealt than Warren considering the aforementioned circumstance.
But chances are the Steelers won’t be this down and out by the time the trade deadline rolls around, so it remains an unlikely scenario.
