Now aged 39, for anyone who thought Wawrinka may be winding down his career can think again, as his desire to continue playing still burns bright.

Is Stan Wawrinka going to continue playing tennis in 2025?

Stan Wawrinka last competed at the Basel Open, where he reached the round of 16.

Wawrinka became the oldest player to win a match in Basel after his Swiss compatriot Roger Federer, who won the Basel Open aged 38 back in 2019.

The former World number three was encouraged by his performances at his home tournament and is pleased with how he feels physically. In addition to still having a passion for the sport, Wawrinka has confirmed he will continue to play tennis in 2025.

“My plan was always to keep going,” he said during his post-match press conference. “The way I feel, both on the tennis court and physically, how well I train, the level of play I achieve… But, of course, there’s also the reality of results and rankings.

“If I no longer have the opportunity to play in major tournaments that I enjoy, that could affect my motivation. So far, that hasn’t been the case.

“Now it’s up to me to do things right on the court to improve my ranking and have the chance to choose the tournaments I like. But my passion for tennis has not diminished.”

Stan Wawrinka exits Basel open after tough loss to Ben Shelton

In a tight match at the Basel Open, Ben Shelton struck 20 winners on the way to registering a 7-6(2), 7-5 over Wawrinka.

The veteran had his chances against the American, but he saved all five break points he faced and capitalised on his opportunity to break Wawrinka’s serve in the second set and close out the match.

Post-match Shelton said about Wawrinka: “We were joking in the locker room before the match that he [Wawrinka] has been on the Tour as long as I have lived.

“He’s got a lot of experience and a lot of love around the world. He’s done incredible things for our sport. Especially here in Switzerland. You can tell with the fan support today… I had to smile at times today because obviously it’s against me.

“But it’s so cool to see a country and tournament get behind a guy like that who’s been such an icon. Shout out to Stan. I don’t think I’m still gonna be out here winning matches at 39.”
