GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) – February may be the offseason for football, but in Gainesville, there’s one day a year when it’s acceptable to play a rival’s fight song — or even praise Notre Dame.
That day is the First Year Awards, which were hosted Monday night by legendary coach Steve Spurrier.
The ceremony recognized standout coaches and players for their achievements in their first year on the field or sidelines.
“It gives Gainesville, Florida a chance to be like the epicenter of college football,” Spurrier said. “One day a year, February 24? The 24, yeah? So we will get some attention all over the country this day.”
SEC Network analyst and former Florida Gators wide receiver Chris Doering is a regular attendee.
This year, Spurrier honored Syracuse head coach Fran Brown, who led the Orange to a 10-win season and revitalized the program in the ACC.
South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers also received recognition after a record-breaking rookie campaign for the Gamecocks.
Additionally, South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer had the special privilege of watching his father, legendary coach Frank Beamer, receive a prestigious honor from Spurrier.
