Field Hockey Loses 2-1 In Round of 16

One of the Whaler field hockey team’s most successful seasons came to an end Wednesday afternoon following a 2-1 defeat to Quabbin Regional High School on the road. Nantucket finishes the year with a 14-4-2 record including their two postseason games.

“It was a really great year,” Whaler head coach Dan Weber said. “I don’t know for sure, but it is definitely the winningest season that we’ve had (while coaching) by a long shot. It was just a really, really good year. I think that we played some really high-level field hockey. I’m just really proud of the team and really proud of the seniors. They were the driving force behind this whole transformation here. We really would have liked to get to a quarterfinal for them, but it just didn’t break that way and that’s okay. It was still a really, really good season. There is nothing for us to hang our heads about. That’s for sure.”

The Whalers, ranked #9 in the Div. 4 state tournament, traveled to face #8 Quabbin and found themselves in a hole early on in the games first minutes off a corner opportunity for the Panthers.

Nantucket went into halftime trailing 1-0, but came out strong to begin the third quarter and tied the game up two minutes into the half after senior Suz Peraner found the back of the goal after corralling a loose ball.

“It was kind of a scramble in front of the net and Suz was the last person to put it in the back of the net,” Weber said. “Suz always had a really good nose for the ball down in front of the net. She played big in big games, so I’m not surprised she scored.”

But just one minute later, the Whalers gave the goal right back and allowed Quabbin to retake their lead – which would ultimately stand until the game was over.

“It was really an evenly matched game,” Weber said. “In the last two years we’ve gotten our butts kicked in that game. So it certainly wasn’t that. I think it could have gone either way. We just came up on the short side. There’s no way to sugarcoat it, it sucks.”

Girls Soccer Loses Round Of 32 Matchup

The Nantucket girls soccer team saw their season come to an end Wednesday afternoon following a 4-2 loss on the road to Lunenburg.

The Whalers were ranked #22 in the state tournament while Lunenburg was ranked #11. Nantucket’s two goals were scored by senior captain Adney Brannigan, who will graduate as the program’s all-time leading point scorer.
