LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) – Our Sports Persons of the Week are two prep football players who battled it out in week one.
In week one of the high school football season, football fans in Southwest Louisiana were graced with a running back battle as the Sam Houston Broncos hosted the Leesville Wampus Cats for our Game of the Week.
And this one certainly didn’t disappoint, as Leesville running back Xavier Ford and Sam Houston running back Drew Bailey each scored six touchdowns and piled up more than 300 hundred yards on the ground.
“Drew is a really good running back, but I was just ready to battle. I knew he was getting him one, so I had to get one too, just like a constant battle back and forth. He’s a great running back, but I just wanted to be better,” Ford said.
“As the night went on, I didn’t even realize it was going so well. I was just rolling with the punches, getting the job done every drive and it just happened,” Bailey said.
Sam Houston Head Coach Chad Davis and Leesville Head Coach Robert Causey said you don’t see those types of performances too often, and seeing their guys go head-to-head was a joy to watch.
“Pretty impressive – I’ve been blessed to see some having to defend a few and I’ve been lucky enough sometimes where I’ve gotten to be on the same sideline as those guys, so that was certainly one to enjoy,” Causey said.
“He had one heck of a game against Leesville, you know. We got to a point in that game where we needed to run the football to keep that clock going and man, he ran extremely well behind that offensive line and ran really well,” Davis said.
In the end, the Broncos beat the Wampus Cats 56-41.
