COLLEGES
No. 1 Texas will start Arch Manning at quarterback Saturday against Louisiana-Monroe while regular starter Quinn Ewers continues to recover from a strained muscle in his abdomen, coach Steve Sarkisian said.
It will be the first career start for Manning, a second year freshman. He relieved Ewers in the second quarter last week against UTSA, and passed for four touchdowns and ran for another in a 56-7 Texas victory.
Manning is the son of Cooper Manning, the grandson of former NFL quarterback Archie Manning, and the nephew of Super Bowl-winning QBs Peyton and Eli Manning. He was one of the highest-rated recruits in the country coming out of high school after the 2022 season.
BASKETBALL
WNBA: Tina Charles passed Sylvia Fowles to become the WNBA’s all-time rebounding leader with 4,007 in her career.
Charles needed three rebounds coming into the game and got them quickly in the first quarter of the Atlanta Dream’s game against the New York Liberty. She broke Fowles’ mark on an offensive tap out that eventually led to a basket 3:08 into the game.
Charles later broke a tie with Fowles for the most career double-doubles when she got her 194th early in the third quarter.
The 35-year-old star got her start in Connecticut before being traded to New York before the 2014 season. The Liberty honored Charles at the end of the first quarter with a video tribute. She waved and pointed to the crowd.
HOCKEY
NHL: The Detroit Red Wings made another investment this week in a young standout, signing Moritz Seider to a seven-year contract worth nearly $60 million.
The Red Wings announced the move with the 23-year-old German defenseman, three days after keeping 22-year-old forward Lucas Raymond with a $64.6 million, eight-year deal.
Detroit drafted Seider with the No. 6 pick overall eight years ago and he has proven to be a great pick. He has 134 career points, the most by a defenseman drafted in 2019.
• Radko Gudas has been named the first captain of the Anaheim Ducks since Ryan Getzlaf’s retirement two seasons ago.
Gudas joined Anaheim a year ago as a free agent. The 34-year-old Czech defenseman had six goals, 12 assists and 128 penalty minutes last season while providing badly needed veteran leadership for the Ducks’ talented young core.
HORSE RACING
TRACK CLOSURE: Freehold Raceway, the oldest horse racing track in the United States, is shutting down at the end of the year.
Track officials made the announcement after a meeting with employees.
Horse racing has been conducted at the half-mile track in central New Jersey since the 1830s. Harness racing become the staple when The Monmouth County Agricultural Society was formed late 1853, and it held harness racing the following year at an annual fair at Freehold Raceway.
GOLF
EUROPEAN TOUR: Rory McIlroy lost the club head on his 9-iron and then lost a chance to take the first-round lead by going out of bounds on the last hole in an eventful 5-under 67 at the BMW PGA Championship in Virginia Water, England.
The No. 3-ranked McIlroy was two strokes off the lead held by No. 363-ranked Matthew Baldwin in the flagship event on the European tour, having bounced back well from the pain of being denied victory at his home Irish Open last week.
