Federal Judge, a 4-year-old gelding by Army Mule, won his first graded stakes Saturday in the Grade 2 Phoenix at Keeneland and picked up the week’s fastest speed figures in the process.
Trained by Brad Cox, Federal Judge now has four wins from six career starts. He won the first two starts of his career last year, then was fourth in the Woody Stephens (G1). After taking a break of more than a year, he returned in July and finished second in an optional-claiming allowance at Saratoga race then led at every call to win another optional claimer by five lengths.
Then came the Phoenix. With Flavien Prat in the irons, he again led at every call and won the six-furlong race by 5 1/2 lengths at odds of 1.74-1 over favored Nakatomi.
Federal Judge earned a 107 Brisnet Speed Rating and a 106 Beyer Speed Figure for the effort.
Truly Quality tied with Federal Judge for the highest Brisnet of the week, also earning a 107 for his come-from-behind win in the Singspiel (G3).
