The president of Iberdrola, Ignacio Sanchez Galan, said the Spanish energy company is “evaluating” new alliance opportunities with Qatar, one of its historic partners and the group’s main shareholder. In recent years, Iberdrola and Qatar have become strategic allies. The collaboration was consolidated in 2011, when the Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) became Iberdrola’s largest shareholder.
Since then, the Spanish company has continued to grow thanks to Qatar’s support for its business model, investing in renewable energy, smart grids, storage and smart solutions for its customers. Qatar, which acquired a 6 percent stake in Iberdrola more than a decade ago, has increased its stake to nearly 9 percent, “I speak to the Qataris every two weeks. In other words, I have a personal relationship with them that is very good, at all levels,” Sanchez Galan said.
