The Southern University football community is in mourning after the death of coach Sean Wallace after a bout with pancreatic cancer, the school announced on Thursday.
He was 52.
“It is with sadness in my heart, my family, and my friends to let you know that my brother Mr. Sean Wallace has passed,” Antoinette Wallace, his sister, said in a Facebook post. “I will let everybody know when the arrangements will be made. Thank you in advance for all the comfort, thoughts and prayers.”
Wallace, who was the safeties coach at Southern, previously earned All-SWAC, SWAC Defensive Player of the Year and two-time Sheridan Black College All-American honors as a Jaguars player. He later played one season in the NFL with the Arizona Cardinals.
In 2023, Wallace served as acting head coach for the Bayou Classic days after the school fired then-coach Eric Dooley. Southern went on to beat archrival Grambling State 27-22.
“Coach Wallace’s legacy will live on in the hearts of many,” a portion post read on the Southern University Facebook page.
