BYU’s schedule is set, and Kevin Young and company will have a good tune-up prior to the regular season tipping off November 5.
Sources tell me that BYU will host Boise State in a secret scrimmage October 26 in Provo. NCAA rules allow preseason “secret” scrimmages between Division One teams, but they must be closed to the public and the two participating schools are not allowed to publicize them, meaning no fans or media will be allowed. Teams are allowed up to two preseason exhibitions/scrimmages. BYU plays an exhibition game October 30 Colorado Christian that will be broadcast. Boise State insider BJ Rains was the first to report of a BYU-State matchup.
Boise State will provide a good first litmus test for BYU. The Broncos are coming off a 22-11 season that saw them get a 10 seed in the NCAA Tournament. They finished #44 in KenPom. The Broncos bring back two of their top three scorers, including leading scorer Tyson Degenhart. The 6-foot-8 forward averaged just under 17 ppg last season was All-MWC First team. They also return his frontcourt mate O’Mar Stanley, who was All-MWC Third Team and averaged 12.7 ppg and 6.6 rebounds.
Of note is that October 26 is the same weekend that 4-star forward Chamberlain Burgess will take his official visit to BYU.
