HAMMOND, La. –The Southeastern Louisiana University men’s golf team will open the spring portion of its 2024-25 schedule this week at the Bentwater Intercollegiate, which runs Monday and Tuesday at the Bentwater Yacht and Country Club in Montgomery, Texas.
Southeastern will be part of a 14-team field that will tackle the par-71, 6,809-yard course. Monday’s first two rounds start at 8 a.m. with the final round set for Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. Live scoring, provided by host Sam Houston State, will be accessible via the men’s golf schedule page at www.LionSports.net.
The Lions and host Bearkats will be part of a field that includes SLU’s Southland Conference rivals HCU, SFA, UIW and East Texas A&M. UT Arlington, Abilene Christian, Tarleton State, Central Arkansas, Chattanooga, Prairie View, Texas Southern and Midland College. Individuals from TCU, Houston and Rice will also compete.
“This is the first time we have played at this event,” Southeastern head coach Lawrence Allan commented. “We’ll be playing against high-level competition, so our hope is to play well and build confidence for the rest of the spring.”
SLU’s top two players in the fall were Viggo Hed and Griffin Dorr. Hed shot under par in all four outings, winning SLC Golfer of the Month for September and capping the fall with a individual medalist title at the Husky Intercollegiate. Dorr shot under par in three of four tournaments last fall.
Hed and Dorr will be joined in the starting five for the spring opener by Patrick Blaum, Colby Sullivan and Preston Paulk. SLU will be paired with SLC brethren HCU and East Texas A&M Monday.
“We’re hopeful that Viggo and Griffin can continue their strong play from the fall,” Allan said. “We genuinely believe we have nine players on our roster capable of being in our top five. If we can get our five best playing their strongest golf at the same time, we have a chance to compete in a very challenging Southland Conference.”
This week’s tournament is the first of seven spring tournaments on tap for the Lions. After the trip to Texas, the Gulf Coast Collegiate is next on the docket Feb. 24-25 at English Turn Country Club in New Orleans.
