MAPLE PLAIN, Minn. – No. 12 Saint John’s golf’s second team, SJU Blue, leads the 15-team field following the opening round of the Minnesota Golf Classic held Saturday, Sept. 7, at Pioneer Creek G.C. (par 72).
SJU Blue scored a 3-over par 291 and is one shot ahead of the tournament’s host, No. 15 Bethel, at 292 (+4). No. 22 Wisconsin-Eau Claire is third at 293 (+5) and No. 25 Gustavus Adolphus’ second team is fourth at 295 (+7). SJU’s varsity is 11th at 306 (+18).
Sunday’s 36 holes begin with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start in Maple Plain.
Junior Tim Fultz (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area) posted five birdies to lead the Johnnies’ 10-man contingent with a career-low, 2-under par 70 and is tied for sixth out of 109 golfers. The tournament also includes 26 Division I golfers who are playing as individuals.
Freshmen Mac Drake (Sioux Falls, S.D./O’Gorman) and Drew Krekelberg (Rogers, Minn.) followed Fultz with a 1-over par 73 each and are tied for 19th.
Senior Andrew Boemer (Eagan, Minn./St. Thomas Academy) matched the freshman duo and is also part of the 12-man tie for 19th to lead SJU’s varsity. Junior Ethan Kress (Woodbury, Minn.) carded five birdies and a 2-over par 74 and freshman Charlie Willette (Eden Prairie, Minn.) collected a 75 (+3) in his first collegiate round for SJU Blue.
