With the 2024-25 season right around the corner, now’s the time to look at some rankings and see where each player lands around the NBA. There is so much talent in this league and it is tough to really place each player around the association.
For example, Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid is one of the best players in the game. He averaged 34.7 points, 11.0 rebounds, and 5.6 assists in the 2023-24 season, but he only played 39 games due to a meniscus injury. Had he stayed heathy, he would likely have won his second consecutive MVP award.
However, due to his injury and lack of a deep playoff run, where should he be ranked? HoopsHype ranked the top 100 players in the NBA heading into the 2023-24 season and Embiid came in ranked No. 5 on the list:
Embiid led the league in scoring, though he didn’t qualify for the scoring title due to games missed, while also posting 11 rebounds nightly, over five assists, one steal and nearly two blocks per game. And he did that all while shooting almost 53 percent from the floor (39 percent from three) and facing opposing teams’ best big-man defender every night, even often staring at double-teams. Those are the numbers a modern-day Wilt Chamberlain might be posting if his prime were taking place today.
Embiid is fully healthy now and after an Olympic run that culminated in him winning a gold medal with Team USA, the hope now is that the big fella will be able to translate that to the 2024-25 season and lead the Sixers on a deep run.
With Paul George now by his side and an improving Tyrese Maxey, there is no excuse for Embiid not to lead Philadelphia past Round 2 for the first time since 2001 barring injury, of course.
