A multi-time tennis Grand Slam doubles champion has expressed their interest in coaching Emma Raducanu.
The 22-year-old is once again at a crossroads as far as coaching is concerned, as Raducanu’s partnership with Nick Cavaday came to an end.
In January the 38-year-old stepped down from his role to focus on his health, meaning former British number one is now on the hunt for a new coach.
There has been plenty of talk about who she should hire, and a former player with a wealth of coaching experience has thrown their name in the mix.
Emma Raducanu has lacked stability in the coaching department since shocking the world to win the US Open title in 2021.
After that triumph at Flushing Meadows she had stints coached by Cavaday, Sebastian Sachs, Nigel Sears, Andrew Richardson, Torben Beltz and Dmitry Tursunov.
As she searches for someone new to join her team, six-time doubles Grand Slam champion Rennae Stubbs expressed some interest in coaching Raducanu and how she would approach it.
“I would consider it, of course,” she said on her self-titled podcast. “I would never say no to an opportunity of working with a Grand Slam champion. What would I work on? The first thing I would do is sit her down and ask her what she wants.
“I think that’s the key. You have to know what your player wants. I think they all come in and think I am going to tweak this or that. I would sit her down and say let’s be honest here, what do you want? How do you want to approach this? And then we go from there.
“It’s a bit of a sit down come to Jesus moment and be honest with her about where I feel like her top level is and how she can get there and not be like we can win another slam tomorrow. Because it’s unlikely at this point. So what are her goals realistically and what can we do to get there?”
Should Stubbs become Raducanu’s coach, she already has some experience under her belt.
The Australian coached former World number one Karolína Plíšková from August 2018 until spring 2019 before joining Sam Stosur’s team.
10 years after winning the 2011 US Open singles title, with Stubbs in her corner Stosur won the women’s doubles title at Flushing Meadows alongside Zhang Shuai.
Stubbs also had a stint with Eugenie Bouchard in 2020, and she was in Serena Williams’ corner for the final tournament of her career at the 2022 US open.
Coaching Raducanu would be a different challenge altogether for Stubbs, but it is certainly one she seems ready for.
