Sierra Leone wins the 2024 Breeders’ Cup Classic: Live updates, results and reactions
After being towards the back of the pack heading into the final turn, Sierra Leone overtakes the field down the stretch to win the 2024 Breeders’ Cup Classic.
Derma Sotogake got off to an excellent start, leading the race through the first quarter mile. Fierceness, one of the betting favorites and the favorite in the Kentucky Derby, eventually overtook Derma Sotogake and led heading into the final turn.
But out of nowhere, Sierra Leone came flying around the right side to not only overtake the field but create ample separation as the runners reached the finish line, securing the victory. He won by 1 1/2 lengths.
After finishing second in the Kentucky Derby, Sierra Leone gets redemption at Del Mar.
