Purdue basketball coach Matt Painter previews Wisconsin

The Purdue basketball team faces another Big Ten test against Wisconsin, and things are already getting a little chippy.
With a little over 6 minutes left in the first half, Purdue led Wisconsin, 27-22. Braden Smith came off a screen set by Trey Kaufman-Renn and the player chasing Smith, Kamari McGee, ran through Kaufman-Renn.
After the whistle was called, Kaufman-Renn looked like he was in pain for a moment.
The play was reviewed and the officials determined it was a Flagrant 2 foul. McGee was ejected from the game.
The NCAA rule book states a Flagrant 2 foul is assessed for contact which is “not only excessive, but also severe (brutal, harsh, cruel) or extreme (dangerous, punishing), while the ball is live.” The rulebook also makes special mention of contact to the groin area which is “not clearly accidental.”
Further, the rule makes no mention of officials needing to determine the intent of the fouling player to cause injury, only whether the act could do so. In that way it’s like the targeting rule in football — which for many people won’t be a helpful analogy.
