WAYNESBORO, Va. (WHSV) – The Salvation Army is kicking off the start of the holiday season by shopping for kids in need across the Valley.

Toy Convoy is back for its 28th year and officially begins Dec. 2, but sponsors of the annual toy drive are getting a head start on donations.

On Tuesday, representatives from Cox Construction & Plumbing and AirPro Solutions Heating & Cooling met up with the Salvation Army at the Staunton and Waynesboro Walmart locations to pick out and buy all kinds of toys.

“We got to get hygiene kits, Lego sets, RC cars, WWE action figures — it’s really cool,” Levi Marshall, who helped pick out toys, said.

The Toy Convoy travels all across the Valley, but wherever you donate toys is where they stay to benefit children in your community. It‘s an initiative Cox Construction & Plumbing said it’s grateful to be a part of year after year.

“The program in itself is important to the community, and it’s a great way that the Salvation Army and Toys for Tots has come together to bridge a gap for the community,” Angie Campbell, co-owner of Cox Construction & Plumbing, said.

While adults did pay for the presents that were bought Tuesday, they enlisted the help of kids from each company to make sure they were picking out only the best of the best.

“It really warms my heart and the heart of our families and loved ones to have that feeling that we’re helping and doing something to help those kids,” Marshall said.

Cox Construction and AirPro Solutions spent $6,000 on toys Tuesday but still need the community’s help. The Salvation Army is serving around 500 families in the greater Augusta County area this holiday season.

You can drop off new, unwrapped toys at Cox Construction, WHSV or any of the Salvation Army locations until Dec. 14.

The shopping spree kick-off for kids in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County will take place Nov. 13.
