Jannik Sinner can help further improve Carlos Alcaraz, says Serena Williams’ former coach Rick Macci.
The two players firmly established themselves as the leading figures in the sport as the 2024 season seemed to serve as a changing of the guard.
The ATP Tour lost two of its greatest players as Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal retired from tennis and Novak Djokovic failed to win a major and lost the World number one ranking.
2024 also saw Sinner and Alcaraz take their head-to-head rivalry to the next level, after playing three times in high-profile matches, and showcasing a scintillating brand of tennis.
Rick Macci coached Serena Williams as a youngster and harnessed her talent before she went on to become an all-time great.
The legendary coach often posts his thoughts on the current game on social media platform X, and has now commented on Alcaraz and Sinner.
Sinner has improved significantly in 2024 and is now the world’s top-ranked player, and Macci thinks his more refined game will force his biggest rival Alcaraz to take his own game to the next level.
“The best thing about Sinners game is he knows there is so many elements that he can improve and sprinkle around his Flamethrower assault off the ground,” he said. “His year-ending domination has caught the eye of every player in the top ten to step up or get stepped on.”
He added: “Alcaraz will go to another elite level and be a double Grand Slam winner because of one main reason and that is a guy named Sinner.”
Sinner started the year by winning the Australian Open and ended it by claiming the ATP Finals title on home soil in Turin.
In between those triumphs, Sinner won six other titles, including the US Open and in June he became the World number one for the first time, and finished the year in that spot.
Sinner has lost just seven matches this year, three of which have come against Alcaraz, who claimed four titles and finished the year as the World number three.
The Spaniard had a terrific summer, which included winning the French Open and Wimbledon back-to-back.
Along with claiming an Olympic silver medal, he successfully defended the Indian Wells title and won his first title in Asia by winning the China Open.
