See the latest class of individuals joining the Greater Lansing Sports Hall of Fame

Carlton Valentine, who played basketball at Michigan State in the mid-1980s and went on to guide the Sexton boys basketball program to a pair of state championships, is among the latest class of individuals set to join the Greater Lansing Sports Hall of Fame.

Valentine is one of eight individuals and two teams who will be part of the 2025 class.

Joining Valentine in this year’s class are decorated Portland softball coach Jack Anderson, former Waverly basketball star Lauren Aitch, Fulton native and standout wrestler Casey Cunningham, former NFL player Steve Maidlow, former Okemos baseball coach Phil Magsig, ex-St. Johns basketball star Casey Rost and successful longtime St. Johns basketball coach Beth Swears.

The 1981 Okemos girls basketball team and 1999 Williamston wrestling team that captured state championships round out the class.

Anderson won more than 900 games during his lengthy tenure leading Portland softball. Aitch led Waverly to a state title as a senior in 2004 and finished fifth in the Miss Basketball voting before going on to play at Michigan State.

Cunningham was a decorated wrestler that won an NCAA title while at Central Michigan before going on to place at the USA Olympic Trials in 2004 and 2008.

Maidlow was a football standout at East Lansing who went on to excel at Michigan State before being a fourth-round selection by the Cincinnati Bengals in the 1983 NFL draft. Magsig won more than 500 games as the coach of Okemos baseball.

Rost was an all-state basketball player at St. Johns who went on to star at Western Michigan where she ended her career as the program’s all-time leading scorer.

Swears won 380 games while leading the St. Johns girls basketball program for 26 seasons.
