Ohio State’s Sonny Styles had a huge hit against Texas tight end Gunnar Helm in the second quarter of their college football national semifinal game on Friday.
Styles was a 2022 Central Ohio High School Sports Awards Football nominee out of Pickerington Central. On the play in question, Helm went up for a probable first-down reception and Styles clobbered him, forcing an incompletion. Texas eventually had to punt.
Styles is having a big first half. He also had a first quarter sack that caused a fumble.
Ohio State is winning at halftime, 14-7. The winner advances to next week’s national title game against Notre Dame.
Styles is one of three former Central Ohio HSSA honorees getting time on defense for the Buckeyes. Styles brother, Lorenzo Styles Jr. was a 2021 football nominee and is a senior cornerback for the Buckeyes. Gabe Powers was the 2022 Football Player of the Year and is a junior linebacker.
Texas has a former Austin Area High School Sports Awards honoree on its roster. Colton Vasek is a redshirt freshman defensive end.
The Austin Area High School Sports Awards, Presented by Thomas J Henry, and the Central Ohio High School Sports Awards, are part of the USA Today High School Sports Awards program.
