It’s a brand new day, and the Seattle Seahawks are back on the winning side of football, and once again have the lead over the NFC West. It’s also a brand new week, and with that comes everyone’s new power rankings! Previously, the Seahawks had soared up the charts following their 3-0 start, but the 0-3 performance immediately after sent them into tailspin. Most of the analysts seemed to agree that the Seahawks belonged somewhere right in the middle, but has a dominant win over the Atlanta Falcons swayed their opinions any? Let’s find out.
ESPN has been the kindest to Seattle so far this season, and their generosity continues this week, moving us up two spots from last week up to No. 12.
12. Seattle Seahawks (4-3)
Week 7 result: Beat the Falcons 34-14
Week 7 ranking: 14
Young riser: OLB Derick Hall
Hall’s underwhelming rookie season has given way to a second-year breakout under Seattle’s new coaching staff. After recording zero sacks last season, the 2023 second-rounder leads the team with 5.0 sacks (ninth-most in the NFL). He also has three tackles for loss — already matching his total from last season — with two forced fumbles and a 64-yard scoop-and-score touchdown Sunday. The Seahawks’ defensive front has been ravaged by injuries over the first seven weeks, but the 24-year-old Hall has been a constant force. — Brady Henderson
The Athletic has also been friendly so far, but unlike the previous few weeks, they’ve actually moved the Seahawks ahead of where ESPN ranked them.
10. Seattle Seahawks (4-3)
Last week: 15
Sunday: Beat Atlanta Falcons 34-14
Who have they beaten? Broncos, Patriots, Dolphins, Falcons
Not only did the Seahawks snap a three-game losing streak on Sunday, but they also beat just their second team with a winning record. DK Metcalf’s four catches for 99 yards were the highlight. The Seahawks, who are eighth in the league scoring (25.71 ppg), lead the NFC West by one game. They lost to the 49ers in Week 6 but get another shot in Week 11 in a game that will say a lot about this team’s playoff chances.
Up next: vs. Buffalo Bills, Sunday, 4:05 p.m. ET
NFL.com had the Seahawks at No. 17 last week, and felt the victory this weekend was worthy of climbing three spots up to No. 14.
The Seahawks had lost three straight coming into Sunday and had seemingly lost some of their offensive mojo, but they regained it with a statement performance at Atlanta, also taking care of business on defense and special teams. Seeing the Geno Smith-DK Metcalf connection reemerge as a force was a huge development, and the defense making several big plays against a high-scoring Falcons team was unexpectedly welcome. The Seattle secondary was still missing multiple regular contributors, yet it picked off Kirk Cousins twice and allowed one pass longer than 19 yards on 35 pass attempts. With the 49ers losing, the Seahawks were able to take over first place in the NFC West. They’re still in decent shape despite their recent lull, although Metcalf is now week-to-week with an MCL sprain, per NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport.
Conor Orr over at Sports Illustrated once was blind, but now he sees. Becoming a convert this week and preaching the Seahawks gospel, he’s moved the Seahawks from No. 17, all the way to No. 10!
10. Seattle Seahawks (4–3)
Last week’s ranking: No. 17
Last week’s result: beat Atlanta, 34–14
This week: vs. Buffalo
Geno Smith looked special on Sunday against the Falcons and while this may be more indicative of Raheem Morris’s middling defense (middling in the sense that he needs more talent), I think we can no longer keep pushing off the idea that the Seahawks could hang on and win the division. A top-10 quarterback, a top-12 offense and a defense that, if I had to guess, will be in the top-10 conversation by season’s end, is more than good enough to get into the playoffs and start making some noise. I was admittedly dismissive of this team after early, gaffe-filled wins over the Broncos and Patriots but have come to my senses.
Frank Schwab from Yahoo! Sports has felt fairly ambivalent about the Seahawks this season, but he can see a division title in their future. He may still need a little more convincing though. Climbing four spots from No. 17, Frank ranks the Seahawks at No. 13 this week.
Can the Seahawks win the NFC West? They lead it now. The 49ers are struggling. And after Sunday’s impressive win at Atlanta we can look back on Seattle’s three-game losing streak and blame it on defensive injuries. The 49ers are probably still favored because they dominate Seattle head-to-head, but it should be a race.
Curiously, The 33rd Team moved both Seattle and Atlanta up one spot after this last weekend, citing the difficult nature of predicting how either team will perform week-to-week.
15. Seattle Seahawks (4-3)
Previous Ranking: 16
The Seattle Seahawks are tough to predict because they can look so different week to week, but they played an awesome game in Atlanta in Week 7.
Geno Smith was fantastic, and Kenneth Walker was productive despite battling the flu. At 4-3, the Seahawks still have a great chance to win the NFC West despite their Week 6 loss to the 49ers.
Next Game: Sunday, Oct. 27 vs. Bills
Once again the lowest ranking of the week comes from USA Today’s Nate Davis. Nate had little to say about the game, but he did rank Arizona Cardinals three spots ahead of the Seahawks. Interesting.
18. Seattle Seahawks (23): Their most impressive win of the season coincided with their first turnover differential of at least +2. The ‘Hawks will only have to leave their formidable nest once more until December.
Finally, Pete Prisco of CBS Sports, had Seattle at No. 16 last week, but moved the Hawks up four spots to No. 12 following the win over Atlanta.
That was a big-time road victory at Atlanta against the Falcons. The defense came up big after a rough stretch of games.
It feels so good to see winning football again. It’s probably a diagnosable psychiatric condition, but my whole week is ruined when the Seahawks lose. At least I don’t take it as personally as Nate Davis does. Come on Nate, what are you trying to prove?
The Seahawks return home this weekend to do battle with Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills. Allen has yet to throw an interception this year, but those boys in our secondary got a taste last weekend, and they’ll be hungry for more. If you can, get to Lumen Field this weekend and bring back our home field advantage! Kickoff is scheduled for Oct. 27 at 1:05 PM.
