Rutan Athletic Club is striving to make a name for itself in the former Summer’s Fitness facility in Jackson Township.
Owner Lauren Rutan purchased the gym in February and invested $30,000 into new equipment and renovations. She added six new employees for a total staff of 13.
“We’ve revamped all the programs,” the Jackson Township resident said.
There are three main classes, which start at $109 a month. Ignite is a cardio-based class; Strength focuses on lifting weights; and Forever Fit is tailored to people 55 or older.
Rutan said there’s also one-on-one personal training available. She is a professional bodybuilder and has been a personal trainer for about 24 years. Rutan represented the United States in the 2017 World Powerlifting Championship and holds state records for squat, bench and deadlift.
She knew Summer Montabone, of Summer’s Fitness, since 2003. So when Montabone approached her about purchasing the gym, Rutan said she saw it as her opportunity to make a longtime goal happen. She “always kind of wanted to open a gym” but said nothing ever “fell into place.”
Rutan Athletic Club is open seven days a week and is offering a special in December and January ― unlimited classes for $129. The club’s next eight-week challenge, which involves unlimited Ignite classes and a personalized nutrition plan, begins Jan. 4.
