Former NFL coach Ron Rivera is returning to Cal, his alma mater, “to help the football program” in a new role. A source said that Rivera’s role “would primarily be administrative,” and he “would be involved in oversight of the program and its big-picture needs, including budget, coaching staff and the student-athlete experience.” Rivera, 63, is a member of the Cal Athletics HOF and was an All-American LB in 1983 (ESPN.com, 2/5). Rivera will serve in a “general manager-like position,” which has “become increasingly prevalent in college football” in the NIL era. Cal’s hiring of Rivera comes after rival Stanford tabbed former NFLer Andrew Luck for a similar position (CBSSPORTS.com, 2/5).
