Indian men’s cricket team captain Rohit Sharma, who opted out of the fifth Test against Australia in Sydney last week, has expressed his desire to remain India’s captain for a few more months and has asked the board to search for a new captain in the meantime, who will have his full support. According to a report in Dainik Jagran on Sunday, January 12, Rohit met with BCCI officials in Mumbai on Saturday in a review meeting of the Australia tour, which was also attended by India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar.
It has been reported that during the meeting, 37-year-old Rohit, who led India to the T20 World Cup title win in 2024, has expressed his intention to continue as captain for a few more months.
During the meeting, star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah’s name was proposed as the long-term successor of Rohit. But there are question marks over the fitness of the 31-year-old cricketer from Ahmedabad. Bumrah, who sits at the No. 1 position in the ICC Test bowler’s ranking and accounted for the dismissal of 32 batters in five Tests against Australia, is dealing with a back injury these days.
Bumrah’s struggles with back injuries have raised doubts over his long-term future as India captain.
Rohit is all set to lead India in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, which is set to start on February 19. India will play all its matches in Dubai as part of the hybrid model agreed upon by the BCCI, ICC, and Pakistan Cricket Board.
After the ICC tournament, which is making a comeback after eight years, all players will take part in the 2025 edition of IPL, and during this period a decision on India’s next captain can be taken by the board officials.
Rohit has already retired from T20Is, and there are not many chances of him playing in the five-match Test series against England, which starts on June 20 in Leeds.
During the meeting, it was also discussed that all the players will have to take part in domestic cricket as per their availability. A player will only be allowed to skip domestic matches if, along with the physio’s report, head coach Gambhir and chief selector Agarkar permit him.
