England’s Brandon Robinson-Thompson continued his impressive recent form to open up a two-shot lead at the halfway stage of the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters.
Robinson-Thompson, who finished eighth in Bahrain last week following an opening 61, carded a second round of 68 at Doha Golf Club to reach 10-under-par.
The world number 262 recorded birdies on the eighth and 10th and drove the green on the short par-four 16th to set up an eagle from four feet in a bogey-free round.
“It was tough this morning actually, the wind was ripping early and I thought the pins were quite tricky so there was a lot of discipline,” Robinson-Thompson said.
“I’ve played this course 50 or 60 times so I’m so comfortable out here. It’s kind of like a home game for me and that’s probably where the confidence comes from.”
South Korea’s MK Kim and the Chinese pair of Li Haotong and Ding Wenyi carded matching rounds of 67 to share second place on eight-under, with England’s Dan Brown and Japan’s Keita Nakajima another stroke back.
Denmark’s Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen, who shared the overnight lead with Robinson-Thompson, could only manage a second round of 72 to remain six-under.
Conor Purcell’s first act on Friday was to finish out the final hole of Round 1 as darkness prematurely ended a solid start. He signed off for a one-under 71 and then followed that up wit a 72 that leaves him one-under overall, nine shots off the leader.
