Rhode Island football heading to FCS playoffs
Rhode Island was seeded at No. 10 and will host Northeast Conference champion Central Connecticut State (7-5) at noon on Nov. 30 (ESPN+).
Rhode Island football’s magical season continues. The Rams heard their name called in Sunday’s 2024-25 FCS Selection Show.
URI is seeded at No. 10 and will host Northeast Conference champion Central Connecticut State (7-5) at noon on Nov. 30 (ESPN+). The winner will face No. 7 Mercer in the second round on Dec. 7.
After rallying from a 17-point deficit to survive against the Great Danes a week ago, URI saw its place climb two spots in the national rankings to No. 13. The Rams ended the season on a high note, defeating in-state rival Bryant on Saturday, 35-21, to move to 10-2 on the year, and 7-1 in CAA play.
This marks the first time since 1985 that Rhode Island has reached postseason play. The win over the Bulldogs also clinched a share of the CAA championship with Richmond — also a first since 1985 when they were in the old Yankee Conference.
The national tournament features 24 teams, with the top eight seeds receiving first-round byes. The remaining 16 teams will meet in the first round, and all those games will be played at the home field of the higher-seeded team. There are four rounds to decide the national championship opponents.
The FCS National Championship is played at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas on Monday, Jan. 6. South Dakota State is the reigning champion, having won its second-straight title in 2023.
