Black-owned media company Revolt has launched a sports vertical with goals to create its own flag football and indoor soccer leagues in late 2025 and early 2026 with support from soon-to-be-announced shows and podcasts centered around those leagues.
The new vertical, Revolt Sports, is headlined by Brandon Marshall’s “I Am Athlete,” which already has an episode on the platform. Atlanta-based Revolt has been in the space for years due to the intersection of sports and Black culture. But the success of its celebrity basketball tournament series, “The Crew League,” makes 2025 the right time to launch similar ideas, said Deon Graham, Revolt chief brand officer.
“Throughout our history, we’ve been in music, culture and entertainment. It’s synonymous. Rappers want to be ballers and ballers want to be rappers,” Graham said. “With the shift in the marketplace of more athletes starting up podcasts and shows, we’re the perfect platform to let them control their own narrative.”
For years, Revolt has had ambitions to launch a sports vertical and new leagues but needed time to perfect the idea. Each of the new leagues will aim to pull professional and retired players from various sports.
“It will feel very Rucker Park-like. Unrivaled is a good example because when they’re there, players are out of season, playing with different teammates and it feels much faster paced. So, we’re definitely taking cues from what’s going on over there,” Graham said. “We’ve seen Rucker Park where NBA stars pull up in the streets and play. That’s the energy we want.”
Each league will require around 50-80 employees including reporters, producers and others as well as an approximate seven-figure investment each year. Revolt declined to comment on how many teams each league would have and where games would be played.
The company said it’s “always open to investor conversations” and that its sales and revenue team is “always selling to sponsors that are a good fit.”
Revolt intends to tap into its digital audience, which includes over 2 million followers on Instagram and over 350,000 followers on Twitter. Revolt’s sports-dedicated Instagram page, which uses the same name as the sports vertical, was launched last February and has more than 66,000 followers.
“It feels like we have a bit of an unfair advantage because we’ve already done this before,” Graham said. “So, now it’s all about figuring out which angles to take and where we want to go. It won’t just be podcasts or coverage. Look at the explosion of something like pickleball. There’s no reason Revolt can’t have a pickleball league of its own one day too.”
“The Crew League” is available on Revolt’s website. Plans are still being determined for how the new leagues would stream their games.
