NEWBERRY, Fla. (WCJB) – Residents tell me there are people that still want the golf course while others are more interested in the park. Some Newberry residents believe the golf course was crucial to the neighborhood while others say the park is more family friendly.
“People wanted to develop it with large condos and all of that and instead we won.” said resident, Doris-Stiles-Glazer. “We won, and it’s going to be for recreational use.”
The two-hour meeting consisted of how the county plans to prepare for the World Masters Championship at the park next year while still keeping those that live in the area in mind.
“It’s about 75 acres so they have a really invested interest I think in wanting to see it remain a nice recreational space that everybody can enjoy.” said Capital Project Coordinator, Ed Williams.
The county bought the land for nearly 4 million dollars and will be using new funds from the one-cent sales tax to bring these ideas to life.
“We have dollars that obviously we’ll put in it which was part of the one-cent sales tax that the voters approved over the last cycle. I’m sure we’ll need to go after some grant dollars and stuff like that.” said Williams.
Williams says it will take years to complete the project but is hoping to start soon
