ESPN’s Adam Schefter brings you your Tuesday evening update regarding San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk.
Per Schefter, the New England Patriots have decided not to explore any further trade possibilities with the Niners regarding Aiyuk. Schefter, like only he can, said that New England is excited about its young wideouts and would prefer to focus on them.
Sure.
Matt Maiocco added what sounds to be a bit more truthful. Per Maiocco, New England and San Francisco had an agreement in place, and the Patriots had a “large offer” to Aiyuk on the table. However, Aiyuk did not show interest in playing for the Patriots.
Look at New England’s starters:
How could anyone blame Aiyuk for turning down what we can assume to be the money that he wants? It’s almost as if…this isn’t all about money. Nothing about the Patriots roster suggests that they’re going to win anytime soon, and as nice as it would be to sign a contract with all of those commas and zeros, Aiyuk is used to playing deep into the playoffs.
That was not going to be an option with the Patriots unless rookie Drake Maye has a superstar type of leap.
So, one team—that we know of—is down, and two more are to go. The Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers are the other two teams to watch.
