Jockey Ricardo Santana Jr. is serving a week-long jail sentence in Kentucky after pleading guilty to two charges of driving under the influence.
The two DUI incidents happened Nov. 19, 2023, and Oct. 27, 2024, according to a report by Bob Ehalt, Byron King and Dick Downey of BloodHorse. He pled guilty to the charges Tuesday and reported to the Shelby County Detention Center the next day. Santana also was charged with reckless driving in connection with the 2023 incident and leaving the scene of an accident in connection with the 2024 incident, but those charges were dismissed under the plea agreement.
Santana most recently rode at Churchill Downs on Nov. 17, and according to a Kentucky Horse Racing and Gaming Commission statement cited in the BloodHorse report he did so after passing a breathalyzer test, and the KHRC is reviewing the situation to determine when Santana can return to the saddle in the state. Santana is named on horses at Churchill Downs again starting Wednesday, and his upcoming mounts include Dapper Moon in the Kentucky Jockey Club (G2).
In a riding career dating back to 2009, Santana has amassed 1,966 wins in 12,350 starts and purse earnings of over $129 million. Highlights include wins in the 2019 Breeders’ Cup Sprint with Mitole and the 2020 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf with Fire At Will. That includes 81 wins in 590 starts this year including graded-stakes wins in the Count Fleet Sprint Handicap (G3) with Skelly, the Noble Damsel (G3) with Ocean Club and the Pocahontas (G3) with La Cara.
